Know What A Passing Score Is At Your College
Before diving into how the scoring works, it is important to mention that all colleges have different standards for what they will accept as a passing score.
But it doesnt do much good to know how they calculate your score if you dont even know what your college considers a passing score in the first place.
If youve heard that you only need a score of 50 to pass a CLEP exam, thats because 50 is the score recommended by the American Council on Education for each college to accept.
Remember, a score of 50 isnt the same as 50% correct. And even a score of 50 wont always get you credit because each college can set their own score standards.
For example, one college can require a score of 50 to pass the Introductory Psychology exam and the college next door can require a score of 65 before they will grant you credit for your exam.
In fact, if I were to guess, I would say that only about 60% of colleges adhere to The ACE Credit Recommendations for passing CLEP scores. So a college or university having a tougher standard is not uncommon.
Thats why its important to check with your college to find out what their passing score is for each CLEP exam that you plan to take. They sometimes have different requirements for different CLEP exam subjects even at the same school.
For example: your university could require 50 to pass the Introductory Psychology exam and 60 to pass the college composition exam. So be sure to check each different CLEP exam that youre planning to take.

Knowledge And Skills Required
The exam measures test takers’ knowledge of the fundamental principles of rhetoric and composition and their ability to apply Standard Written English principles. In addition, the exam requires a familiarity with research and reference skills. In one of the two essays, test takers must develop a position by building an argument in which they synthesize information from two provided sources, which they must cite. The requirement that test takers cite the sources they use reflects the recognition of source attribution as an essential skill in college writing courses.
The skills assessed in the College Composition exam follow. The numbers in parentheses indicate the approximate percentages of exam questions on those topics. The bulleted lists under each topic are meant to be representative rather than prescriptive.
Increase Your Chances Of Passing
Understanding how CLEP tests are graded can only help you so much because youll never know what raw percentage will get you the scaled score you need. But its still helpful to remember that there is no penalty for incorrect answers so you might as well select something for every question.
Its frustrating that there is so much ambiguity around the CLEP exam scoring, but heres what you can do to give yourself the best shot at success:
I hope those suggestions are helpful even though you cant know the exact percentage that you need to score to pass your CLEP test.
If youve already taken a CLEP exam, please post the scores you were getting on your practice tests prior to testing and the score you received on your actual exam so that others can compare and get a better idea of when they are ready to test.

Transfer Your Clep Credits
Assuming you passed the test, now its time to transfer your credits to the institution of your choice.
Ideally, youll know which institution you want to send your scores to before you register for the exam.
This is beneficial because each exam you register for includes one free score send. That is, when you register for a CLEP exam, you can choose the institution that you want to receive your score. Youll see this option during the registration process, which we discuss above.
If you want to send your scores after you take the exam, or you want to send your scores to more than one institution, you can do so for an additional $20 .
Youll need to sign in to your College Board account, and then click the Request a Transcript button under the My CLEP Account dropdown menu.
A few important notes on transferring credits:
- Different institutions will have different minimum scores required to receive credit for each exam. You can generally find this information on the college/universitys website. You can also get this info directly from the person in charge of transfer admissions.
- To order a transcript for a CLEP exam funded by DANTES, youll need to use the Parchment Transcript Ordering Service. You cannot use your College Board account.

Whats The Difference Between Ap And Clep
AP stands for Advanced Placement. Its a program that aims to help high students take college-level courses while still in high school.
The goal is to help students be better prepared for college, skip introductory college classes, or even earn college credit if the university allows it.
Generally, your high school will offer courses specifically to prepare you to take the AP Exam.
It is possible to take the exams without taking the accompanying course, though this isnt common. AP Exams are only offered once a year in May.
CLEP, in contrast, is aimed more at working professionals looking to get a degree. CLEP exams are offered year-round at a variety of locations.

What Is A Passing Score At My School
When it comes to setting a passing score, most schools look to the American Council on Education for recommendations. Each year, the organization reviews the content of CLEP exams, and determines what the recommended passing score is ACE typically recommends a score of 50 as the minimum to pass.
Many schools follow ACEs recommendations, some set their own.
ACE guidelines do change on occasion. For example, last year the recommended credit value for Humanities dropped from 6 credits to 3. Unfortunately, cash-strapped schools dont typically update their CLEP information in a timely fashion. Thats why its important to confirm credit values with your advisor before taking the exam.
Do Clep Exams Transfer
Just because your existing school accepted CLEP for credit, doesnt mean your transfer school will recognize it the same way. When transferring, your new school will evaluate your scores independently, applying their own standards to determine whether youll receive credit, and what requirements the exam will fulfill.

What Is The Best Study Guide For The Clep College Algebra
The best CLEP College Algebra study guide is the one that keeps you fully motivated. Look for an option thats more inspiring than a boring CLEP College Algebra study book or a tiresome set of practice problems. A system with the features described below will give you the inspiration you need.
What Is Reliability
Heres the most basic definition of reliability: its the degree of consistency in results that a measurement will bring when replicated under similar conditions.
With a CLEP exam that means that if someone took the Natural Sciences CLEP exam, they should expect to get similar results each time assuming their knowledge didnt change.
If they took the exam one day and got a 78 and then the next day, they only scored a 25 something is probably wrong with the reliability of that exam. It is inconsistent.
How Do CLEP Exams Measure Reliability?
The reliability of CLEP exams is tested using two measurements:
Ill attempt to give you a quick and simple definition of what those mean. If you want the really technical answer, then you can read much more about it on this page of the College Board Website. And if youre a statistician and notice any mistakes I made in explaining it, please correct me. Lets get into it. Do I use parentheses too much?
The Reliability Coefficient
To measure the reliability coefficient, they take individual questions and compare the answers against other individual questions.
For example, if they see that people who get question #43 correct are always answering question #25 incorrectly, there might be something going on there. Thats oversimplified. Its much more technical than that. But thats the gist of it.
The Standard Error of Measurement
